And thus we take a pride of having a good fleet of loooongggggggg cars (purists, pardon us for freewheeling few terms! ) at our disposal what you know as Limousines.
But have you ever wondered what and how this elongated counterpart of standard cars came into the very existence?
Well, a little brush of history first. Orlando Limo Services tells you how !
History goes back to 1902 when the very first automobile limousine was designed so the driver can outside under a covered compartment. The word limousine has been primarily derived from the name of existing French region called ‘Limousin’, because this covered compartment physically which a resemblance of the raised hood of cloak had worn by the shepherds in that area. But many etymologists believe that it derived its name from the chauffeurs who wore a Limousin-style cloak while driving at the open driver’s compartment meant for them, against the protection from the weather. Whatever be the origin, it certainly means protected space.
The company named Armbruster (which was Coach Company) built the very first “stretch limousine” in Fort Smith, Arkansas, around the year 1928. The primary purpose of these elongated cars was to used to ferry big wigs likeas Glenn Miller and Benny Goodman, and their bands & equipment. These precursors of current day limousines were popularly termed “big band buses”.
Way back in 1916, the Society of Automobile Engineers finally defined a limousine as “a closed car seating three to five inside, with driver’s seat outside.” There are few more definitions meeting yesteryear built practices but the former was often quoted and followed.
In German arena, a Limousine is generally a sedan, while an elongated-wheelbase car refers to Stretch-Limousine.
There may be certain variations as per the hearsays. But Limo is certainly a part of urban legend too. And so are the Limos zooming past at Orlando streets – we too are the history in making!
